Why Vasuki didn’t do better
Miss India Vasuki Sunkavalli couldn’t make it to the top 16 finalists, continuing India’s dry run at the Miss Universe pageant for over a decade now.
Vasuki, a 27-year-old from Hyderabad, represented India at the pageant in Brazil this year. After the top 16 list of finalists was announced Vasuki tweeted, "sorry. if I upset many. I did give it my best shot. may the most deserving girl win.."
She seems to have had a bit of misfortune at the pageant this year. Earlier, the 27-year-old was disappointed as she could not pose in her national costume because it was not delivered on time.
Her costume was held up for over a week at the Brazilian customs department. A disappointed Vasuki had tweeted: "u work so hard for something n u can't deliver for reasons not in ur control. My national costume was stuck at brazil customs for over a week."
Her no-show at the national costume round may have tilted the scales somewhat against her in the run-up to the crown. India hasn't won the Miss Universe crown since 2000. It was model-turned actress Lara Dutta who had won the crown for India in that year.
Vasuki was regarded as one who definitely stood a chance. She is a lawyer by profession. She was crowned I Am She - Miss Universe India on July 15 in Mumbai earlier this year. Vasuki is also a state level basketball player and a trained dancer.
But for now, we have to wait till next year.
