Lifestyle factors that young people adopt add up to hair loss. Partying late into the night is detrimental due to many reasons. First, intake of alcohol, smoking and inhaling stale air does no wonders to your hair. Alcohol taken regularly interferes with absorption of vitamins from the diet, less vitamins means less nutrition available for your crowning glory.

Stress is another factor which can accelerate hair loss. Fear of approaching exams, rejection by peers and worrying about college admissions leads to undue stress in the young generation.

Pollution and environmental factors like living close to factory areas exposes your hair to harsh chemicals present in the air. This can rob hair of its lustre making it look limp and dull.

Fungal infections like seborrhoeic dermatitis can cause scalp itching and hair loss if not treated. These infections can occur in children and adolescents and is more often in low socio-economic strata of society.

New hairstyle trends like braiding the hair tightly or taking tight plaits or ponytails pulls the hair from the roots and this may cause patch balding in the front and at the hairline.

Excessive use of hairstyling products like hairsprays, mousse and gels can affect the quality of hair and in the long term may lead to hair fall. So choose a shampoo and conditioner that agrees with your hair type and stick to it instead of trying out new products that keep flooding the market.

Heredity also plays a role in determining your hair quality and quantity. Male pattern baldness can strike as early as late twenties so it is important to identify the type of baldness because even though there is no cure for this condition, it can be slowed down with the use of medication.

Psychiatric conditions like mania, schizophrenia and depression may cause a person to pull out his hair. Trichotillomania is the medical term for pulling out hair.Hence there may be patchy baldness in certain areas of the scalp and treatment of the psychiatric illness is important so that the habit is stopped.

Adequate sleep is important for hair cells to rest and rejuvenate. Even staying up late at home is harmful as hair cells need to rest.

Lastly, a good balanced diet with plenty of different fruits and vegetables are important for health of your hair. Along with vitamins, iron and protein are essential to maintain good hair quality and avoid problems such as hair loss.
