The mantra of today's times is - Yoga is the wonder pill! And all of us are tuned into that! And kids are no exception! And in today's times, I see a lot of children adopting this path. However it’s not like I’m canvassing for yoga being an utter necessity in children’s lives. Yoga is good for children and there’s nothing better than starting young, no doubt. But let’s not look at it from the physical fitness point of view only. Kids are already so active, that there is no major need of any more dosage.
Where yoga can be really be helpful for children is for increasing concentration, alertness, flexibility, appetite, making them calm, controlling hyper activity by channelizing it into something so positive, improving posture, helping better bodily and internal growth, inculcating a great way of life, along with the obvious physical fitness and development.
Another major reason why yoga is so reliable for a child of any age is that it carries no side effects, unless of course done carelessly and without expert guidance.
So if you think your child is ready to cooperate with you on starting with yoga and rather enjoys it in the process, then trust me, you’re gifting him/her something so precious for life. It’s like an asset that’ll stay with him/her forever. When one starts young then it’s not necessary that they continue with it regularly till the end of life, but once learnt, the person tends to go back to it more often than imagined.
What is generally good for kids is a sequence of various poses which incorporates different aspects of the inner and outer being. Over a period of time, most of the important poses get covered. A good yoga school is the right approach to kick starting since here kids would do it along with many others, which always keeps them motivated and clued-in. There’s a schedule which is hard to break. And I feel you learn so much more this ways than by having an instructor come home to teach.
Suryanamaskar is highly prescribed always!
