Titled "Romancing the Stone", this is a series that came together following a serendipitous stopover at Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in central Karnataka, and once the capital city of the powerful and prosperous Vijayanagara kingdom. Hampi is a subject that has beguiled photographers the world over with an unfailing ability to tell a spectacular story through a trail of architectural ruins that teem with depth, character and variety of form.
Sanjay captures the haunting, almost ghostly magic of some of these structures in colour as they hold on to their existence, in some cases seemingly by a thread, battling the ravages of time and man. Most of these images look beyond the obvious magnificence of the ruins, focussing instead on the gigantic boulders standing guard over the remains of the City of Victory. The boulders, each one perched precariously; daring gravity almost, have been captured in the evening light, bestowing a luminescent gold-like hue and transforming a dry and near monochromatic landscape into one that gleams with opulence and depth.
