Alcatraz is still as intimidating as it was when it first opened as a federal prison in 1933. The former home of Al 'Scarface' Capone, and Robert Stroud (aka the Birdman) remains one of San Francisco's most popular attractions, with highlights being the recorded narratives of former guards, the chance to look around the former guardhouse (the oldest structure on the island) and a snoop around Al Capone's old cell.
