Rabat is both a modern city and a site of incredible historic significance. The older parts of the town, which date back to the 12th century, include a mosque constructed in 1184, along with the remains of a Moorish settlement, while the newer parts are home to a pleasure garden and royal buildings. The speed at which the new town was constructed made it one of the most ambitious and modern urban projects built in Africa in the 20th century.
