Tucked away 30 kms from Bangalore city, at Devanahalli, is an interesting piece of heritage - the Devanahalli fort. The fort was initially constructed in mud by Malla Baire Gowda, a feudal lord of the Avati clan, in 1501 AD. Malla Baire Gowda was given the go-ahead to construct this fort by Devaraya, the head of the Avatis.

The fort is believed to have been constructed to offer shelter to passing travellers.

Interestingly, Devanahalli was earlier known as Devanadoddi.
