Congratulations to the Duchess of Cambridge, who turns 31 today!. Since she walked down the aisle at Westminster Abbey, the Duchess has developed a unique sense of style and come into her own as a global fashion icon. We look back at some of her sartorial highlights and find out what makes each look so special...

The wedding dress

Never has a wedding gown been so eagerly anticipated. On 29 April 2011, Kate arrived at Westminster Abbey and the world finally had a glimpse of her dress - a long-sleeved lace and ivory satin design by Sarah Burton, creative director for the late Alexander McQueen.

'Kate absolutely knows what suits her in terms of clothing cuts, shapes and colours - whether it's her beautifully elegant wedding dress that seemed at once both modern and traditional, or smart casual wear,' says award-winning London personal stylist Chantelle Znideric.

'She's not afraid to create different looks that bring out her personality and knows how to have fun with fashion. Over the past year we've seen her style grow with her - there's definitely a more confident Kate behind that beaming smile.'
