You can blow a fortune on expensive hair products and visiting the best salons (and Lord knows, most women do), but if you don't attend to the fundamentals of hair care then your up 'do' is going to look like a dog's dinner regardless of how much you spend on it.
* Don't dye it too much
Or rather, don't dye it too much yourself. Many women touch up their hair dye every six to eight weeks - and there's a reason the majority of them get a professional to do it for them. It may be more expensive than doing it yourself, but it's much kinder to your hair and they use products that are better for your hair and take care to protect your scalp.
* Don't use too many products
We all have our favorite products when it comes to styling, but be careful not to use too many and always be aware of what ingredients you are putting on your hair. It is usually worth spending a bit to get the right products for your hair and sticking to what you know works for you - the wrong ones could leave your locks dry and unhealthy and could even damage your skin.
* Don't burn it
Rather obvious this one, but I'm not talking about setting your hair on fire. Cheap straighteners can dry out or burn your hair - and you will save in the long run by investing in a good set. And even then, make sure they are not set to too high a heat.
* Don't play with it too much
Compulsive hair twirling may seem harmless at the time, but it could eventually lead to a sore spot on your scalp and even a small bald patch. So leave it alone!
* Don't ignore your split ends
Split ends are a common form of hair damage. Unfortunately, the only way to really get rid of them is to cut them off. Whatever you do, don't leave them too long as your hair will only sustain more damage and you may end up having a pretty drastic snip at your hairdresser.
* Don't get too much sun on it
We have had it drilled into us that exposing our skin to too much sun is very, very bad, but do you give much thought to what it is doing to your hair and scalp? All those UV rays will dry out your hair, make it frizzy, dry it out and cause split ends and other damage. Protect it by covering it up or slapping on protective products as well as the sunscreen you put on your skin.
* Don't eat the wrong foods
Much like your skin and nails, your hair suffers when you eat a diet that is high in fat and sugar. Fruit, vegetables and foods that contain 'good' fats (such as oily fish) will pass on their benefits to your hair. So tuck in!
