Grooming the Groom: A metrosexual’s guide to wedding day makeovers

By Meenakshi Shankar

We all know that if it were left up to the grooms, they would willingly take a hands-off approach to the wedding-day details! Dutifully delegating the catering, the wine tasting, the cake tasting, the personalized invitation…gets pushed on to the bride’s plate. But there’s one important facet that you, as a groom cannot push or outsource. It’s grooming for the D-day!

Gone are the days when you walked into a store that catered to the groom! You are a metro sexual man…you are suave, handsome, debonair and you want to look good. You want the eyes to follow you when you walk into that room.

Yes, I agree that all the attention of the day will be upon your lovely bride, that doesn’t give you a pass to neglect your own manly maintenance. Besides, your wife-to-be will want to see her guy standing there as handsome as ever, so a little manscaping is necessary for looking your best on the one. Well, for starters, you really wouldn’t want her relatives to whisper…”Why ever did she choose him in the first place?”

Face "I Do" with Confidence

To get your face camera-ready and crowd pleasing, start using a moisturizer now. There are many available options created specifically for men. Look for special ingredients like Sunflower Seed and Cucumber extract that help create a moisture barrier -- particularly important for men after shaving or lying in the sun on their honeymoon.

Get a good facial

Yes. You heard us right. To keep your skin smooth and blemish free, facials are the way to go. Estheticians work their magic extracting blackheads, opening pores, and cleansing and toning skin for an even, more youthful appearance. Most facials take anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour or more to complete, and they're a great way to relieve pre-wedding stress. And make it a point to head to your salon around the corner every month to get that extra special glow.

A shave and a haircut …

I rate this as the most important part of getting wedding ready. And it’s not enough to sit on your stylist’s chair and say, ‘Chop away!’. It’s your D- day and you need to look that notch bit more than you would on any other given day. As a grooming rule of thumb, you should meet with your stylist at least one week before any big event (i.e. your wedding) to give your hair time to adjust to the new cut, and to give yourself time to practice styling options. This goes for removing unwanted facial hair as well.

Treat yourself to a manicure and pedicure

If you thought that these were merely a woman’s little treats, then statistics read that 6 out of 10 men go in for a manicure and pedicure. Several spas and nail care centers offer manicure services just for men that will clip, file and buff nails to manly perfection. Yeah, you might feel a little weird going in for the service, but it’s quite therapeutic…just the stress buster you need before the I do’s settle in!
