The world's most beautiful first ladies
By Meenakshi Shankar
Powerful, resilient, glamorous, famous – for once, we are not talking about the celebs who rule the entertainment and fashion biz, but we are talking about powerful women who stand loyally by the sides of powerful men who rule the state. And as the oft-used saying goes, “Behind every man, there is a beautiful woman”, we bring you our top five takes on the most elegant and beautiful first ladies.
Queen Rania of Jordan
Her Majesty Queen Rania is the world's youngest queen. A Coldplay fan, she's also a fashion designer's darling (Givenchy and Roland Mouret are favorites), a Desperate Housewives devotee and an outspoken advocate in her Muslim country for long-taboo causes like women's rights and victims of child abuse. Whether commanding attention at the 2004 World Economic Forum or plopping herself on the floor with a dozen children at a puppet show to highlight child safety, Rania, as she is called by friends and colleagues, "is the epitome of modern royalty.” It’s not suprising when there is comparison to Late Princess Diana. A doting mother Queen Rania admits with humility that as a working mother, juggling the demands of her job and four young children is not easy. Like all parents she says, "I strive to achieve the right balance. My official activities take account of the children’s school day and their plans and programs, and extensive periods of time on overseas engagements are limited. Spending a couple of hours each night with the children doing homework or reading to them in bed gives them, and me, a sense of security."
