Asymmetric drapes are taking the fancy of our fashion-forward celebs across the world. The new silhouette is quite the head-turner and is also a key trend for Spring and Pre-Fall 2013 collections of important design houses including Elie Saab, Alberta Ferretti, Chanel and Christian Dior.
Last week alone we had quite a few celeb-spottings in this hip trend. Our very own fashionista Deepika Padukone arrived at the premiere of her new blockbuster 'Ye Jawani Hai Deewani' wearing an ethereal high neck cream asymmetric kurta with delicate white embroidery from Pankaj and Nidhi paired with churidaars and a white DvF clutch.
Taylor Swift made an appearance on the CMT Music Awards red carpet in a nude beaded Elie Saab Spring 2013 rise and fall hemline dress with Jimmy Choo booties. Though the look could have used some colour, she looked good.
Earlier this month, Rachel Bilson was on trend, wearing a delicate, floral and summery Chanel strapless tiered dress paired with metallic strappy sandals.
At the 2013 Met Gala we had a few sightings of the asymmetric silhouette trend.
Jessica Biel looked sensational in a Giambatista Valli Spring 2013 Couture strapless dress with a fitted bodice and voluminous high-low skirt which was paired with webbed tights.
Kate Beckinsale rocked two big trends of the night, in a bright pink draped dress with a rise-fall hemline from Alberta Ferretti, paired with black strappy sandals, striking earrings and an Edie Parker box clutch.
Michelle Williams flaunted her usual minimalistic style in a black Saint Laurent gown and Olympia Le-Tan book clutch.
You can experiment with this trend too. Recreate Deepika’s look by pairing an asymmetric kurta with churidaars or pair a high-low hem skirt with a fitted top. Since the look has its share of quirk, you should keep your accessories and make-up simple. Most high-street brands have stocked up on asymmetric skirts, so go right ahead and rock this trend!
The prestigious 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival opened on 15th May 2013. The well-attended festival at the beautiful French Riviera is a melting pot of world cinema and style. Though the last four days have not been perfect weather-wise, we have seen some very glamorous frocks take to the Grand Théâtre Lumière red-carpet. Today on Style Mantra, I make an attempt to profile my best-dressed from each of the days. No mean feat that, if you consider the choices one has!
Day 1: Go Big or Go Home
Nicole Kidman kick-started the proceedings at the Great Gatsby premiere, looking amazing in an intricately embroidered Christian Dior Spring 2013 Couture ankle length frock with a fitted bustier and big skirt paired with delicious pink pumps and a bight fuchsia pout.
The Cannes regular, Fan BingBing made her presence felt with a beautiful pink satin Louis Vuitton gown with a beaded bodice and long train. She accessorised with a Louis Vuitton tasselled minaudiere and side swept hair.
The biggest surprise was Zhang Yuki who looked like the perfect Cannes princess in her gorgeous Ulyana Sergeenko Spring 2013 Couture bight green voluminous gown with a plunging neckline. She finished off her stunning look with a Jimmy Choo clutch, coiffed hair and red pout.
What is Cannes without a few floor sweeping big gowns and Day 1 truly set the tone for the event!
Day 2: L’Oreal girls dazzle
Day 2 had Sonam Kapoor walk down the red carpet in perhaps her best look to date. She wore a Dolce & Gabbana custom floral printed big gown with a fitted strapless bodice paired with matching pumps.
Fan BingBing brought out a glittering Elie Saab lemon yellow Spring 2012 Couture gown with elbow length sleeves paired with striking orange lips, silver box clutch and Chopard jewels.
The ever consistent Freida Pinto shimmered in a silver beaded Sanchita gown with crystal dragonfly motifs and a thigh high slit. She accessorised with Jimmy Choo Lance sandals and a Swarovski clutch. Bright red lips and an elegant up-do completed her look.
Day 3: The Cannes Divas
Eva Longoria finally made an appearance on the red carpet on Day 3 in her staple floor sweeping gown, this time a nude, sparkling Zuhair Murad gown with a high neckline, full sleeves and an open back.
Berenice Bejo stood out in a white tiered Spring 2013 gown from Alexis Mabille, paired with a vivid blue tuxedo jacket with satin lapels. Her Olympia Le-Tan clutch was a great choice.
Fan BingBing was quite the hea-turner again on Day 3, in an Ulyana Sergeenko duchess satin heavenly blue gown from her Spring 2013 Couture collection accessorised with brilliant Chopard jewels and a neat braided updo.
Day 4: New faces, fresh style
Cheryl Cole looked fantastic in a rich maroon Zuhair Murad, full sleeved gown with a train.
Carina Lau was the epitome of grace in a caped white Elie Saab gown.
The scene stealer of the day was Nieves Alvares who looked divine in a beautiful custom red strapless Ralph and Russo gown with a dramatic train flowing from a hip detail. She added a gold Louboutin clutch and Chopard jewels to her look.

This year’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala, which is one if the biggest days in the fashion calendar, had a PUNK: Chaos to Couture theme. Though a lot of celebrities didn’t stick to the theme, the event saw high drama with edgy and experimental style being presented on the red carpet.
Nina Dobrev looked breath-taking in her Monique Lhuillier black lace jumpsuit with a sheer skirt overlay and leather accented halter. She kept the rest of her look simple with dramatic cat eyes and black stone jewellery.
Cara Delevingne, the hot new face on the fashion block, stuck to the punk theme and decked herself out in a beautiful black Burberry Prorsum gown with studs on the bodice and a plunging neckline. She accessorised with a gold studded white clutch, deep side parted braided hair and dark goth eye make-up.
Sienna Miller also stuck to Burberry in a simple white column gown but her accessories took it to the next level and added the punk edge. She wore an amazing spiked & studded Burberry leather cropped jacket, spiked hair band and carried a white and gold clutch.
Cameron Diaz looked stunning in a caped Stella McCartney ink-blue column gown with a spiked belt. She kept her hair off her face and her make-up simple.
Newly brunette, Amber Heard looked every bit the bombshell she is, with a red beaded, column gown with sheer inserts from Emilio Pucci, accessorised with a red clutch. Though she didn’t stick to the theme, she looked gorgeous.
Taylor Swift wore an on-trend J. Mendel cut-out gown with sheer lace inserts and studded collar for added punk drama. Her eye makeup and hair elevates the look and gives it the required edge. She looks fierce!
Does this best dressed list match yours? Will you be rocking the punk theme anytime soon?
Last week Priyanka Chopra stunned in a fresh off the LFW runway Arpan Vohra black and gold dress. The beautiful column gown featured gold stripe embellishments which she accessorised with a black Louis Vuitton clutch, striking gold Viange earrings and a side-swept do.
The black and gold combination is a sure win on the red carpet as we have seen earlier with many celebrity appearances. There couldn’t be a more glamorous mix of colours. Who can forget Naomi Watts' Alexander McQueen at the People’s Choice Awards, Kate Hudson’s Alexander McQueen at the Golden Globes and Nicole Kidman’s L’Wren Scott Oscar gown that got them on every best dressed list.
Earlier this month Emmy Rossum donned a 20’s flapper girl fringed gold Naeem Khan dress with black stripe accents, which she paired with Rupert Sanderson sandals and lacquered hair. Vanessa Hudgens shimmered in a Jenny Packham plunging black dress with gold accents some time back at a Golden Globes after party. She carried an eye-catching gold Swarovski clutch.
Back home, our celebs teach us how we can dazzle in black and gold.
The easiest way to max this look is to wear an elegant black and gold sari like Kajol in her Sabyasachi. You can never go wrong with this one!
The other option is to go for a black dress with gold accents like the minimalist Tom Ford dress with a bold gold belt that Kareena Kapoor wore to a recent event.
Gold tops and shirts on black pants also look very attractive as seen on Sridevi and Anushka Sharma.
The combination is a sure-shot way to turn heads at an evening event. Keep the hair and make-up clean. Go for lacquered locks that keep the hair off your face. Experiment with gold accented black footwear and keep accessories and makeup muted to avoid looking like a disco ball.
2013 Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards were held over the weekend at USC’s Galen Centre in Los Angeles California and the looks that hit the purple-carpet checked all the boxes for the big Spring-Summer trends for this year. Here is a round-up of the looks that stood out and the trends you should start stocking up on now!
Spring Print Perfect:
From funky to fresh, prints and colors are in this season and how! Nearly every look that took to the red-carpet celebrated prints.

Fergie looked beautiful in her full-sleeved Mary Katrantzou Spring 2012 under-sea print dress, styled with neon yellow sandals and a Swarovski clutch.
Look Tip: Pair a great print with neon or solid color shoes.
A little skin is In:
Hint of midriff and flirty sheer are in this season.
Take inspiration from Katy Perry who looked uber sexy in a printed midriff-baring Hervé Léger by Max Azria Pre-Fall 2013 ensemble which had a halter top and high-waist skirt. She kept the rest of her look muted with black Loubs.
Miranda Cosgrove wore a breezy multicolor Stella McCartney printed dress with an asymmetrical sheer panel. She added a pair of blue peep toes and matching clutch to her look.
Look Tip: Don’t be afraid of colour but keep the rest of your look muted.
If you have endless pins worth flaunting, this is the trend for you.
Kristen Stewart looked effortlessly chic in an ink blue dotted Osman shorts-suit that she paired with Christian Louboutin ‘Pigalle’ pumps and a messy fishtail braid.
Selena Gomez looked cool in a flowy baby-blue peplum accented top and white linen shorts ensemble from Oscar de la Renta’s Sprint 2013 collection. She paired it with python printed Gucci sandals and a light pink DvF clutch.

Jessica Alba looked ultra-fashionable in a fit-and-flare Mary Katrantzou Spring 2013 printed dress paired with Christian Louboutin bow pumps and a a Stella McCartney clutch.
Fit and Flare:
The most flattering dress silhouette is in this Spring as flaunted by Jessica Alba and Kiernan Shipka.
Keirnan Shirpka looked adorable as usual in an a-line Rag and Bone floral print dress paired with edgy booties.
Look Tip: Pair metallic accessories with a great fit-flare dress and experiment with colour in your eye make-up.
What were your favorite looks and trends from the Kid’s Choice Awards?
The 2013 Oscars was held at the packed Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles yesterday with the who’s who of Hollywood in attendance. Here is a look at all the stand out red carpet appearances that blew us away and some of the trends that came out.
Naomi Watts was my favourite of the night, by miles! She dazzled in the biggest ‘trend of the night’, metallic, wearing a stunning blue-grey fully sequinned custom Giorgio Armani Prive gown with a modern shoulder cut-out. She paired her gown with sparkling Neil Lane jewels, messy updo and pink lip colour.
Jessica Chastain looked quite the flawless glamazon in a copper embellished custom strapless Giorgio Armani Prive gown with a slight train. She finished off her look with Harry Winston jewels, soft side swept red waves and a striking red lip.
Halle Berry rocked a full sleeved black and silver column gown from Versace (which I first mistook for a Zuhair Murad) with structured shoulders and plunging neckline. The gown was on trend with silver striped embellished detailing.
The Oscars red carpet (much like Cannes) won’t be what it is without a dose of princessy glamour. We were treated to the most ethereal ball-gowns courtesy Amy Adams and belle-of-the-ball, Jennifer Lawrence.
Amy Adams wore a powder blue Oscar De La Renta gown with a strapless beaded bodice and a soft and dramatic tulle skirt. She finished off the look with a neat updo.
Jennifer Lawrence wore a blush pink Dior Haute Couture gown paired with a Roger Vivier silver clutch and she wore her delicate Chopard necklace down her back, much like Anne Hathaway, starting a mini-trend!
What’s a red carpet without a dose of gorgeous black gowns?
Sandra Bullock looked beautiful in a silver beaded part-sheer, black Elie Saab Couture gown with cap sleeves. She carried a vintage Swarovski clutch and wore Harry Winston jewels, pinning part of her center-parted hair with a diamond brooch.
Adele went back to her favourite colour in a black Burberry gown. The performer of the night finished off her glittering look with big hair.
Nicole Kidman was glowing and on trend in a flattering L’Wren Scott scoop neck black and gold melting metallic gown. Fred Leighton gold jewels and L’Wren Scott black & gold lattice heels completed her look.
In a sea of muted and neutral colours, we had Jennifer Aniston, Sally Field and Reese Witherspoon brighten up the proceedings with colour.
Jennifer Aniston stuck to her favourite brand, Valentino, in a red Spring 2013 Couture ball-gown with a strapless fitted bodice and full skirt. She carried a matching red Salvatore Ferragamo clutch and left her hair open.
Reese Witherspoon looked fabulous in a two-tone cobalt blue and black strapless Louis Vuitton dress. She styled her blonde hair in cascading side-swept golden waves.
These were my favourite looks from the event with special mentions going out to Charlize Theron looking white hot in Dior Haute Couture, Amanda Seyfried in Alexander McQueen and the ageless Jane Fonda in a canary yellow Versace gown.
Who were your favorites from this event?
Early this week, the 2013 Grammy Awards were held at the L.A. Staples Center. Here are some of the striking red carpet arrivals and fashion moments from the event.

Spring is in the air and one of the liveliest colours of the season, Green, is finding favour with our stylish set. Ranging from sea-foam to teal, bright emerald to deep forest the options and shades are endless. Take a cue from celebrities on how to pick, style and work the colour.
Bipasha Basu dazzled in an ultra-short, studded green dress from BinalS, at the CCL curtain raiser. She styled her dress with golden strappy sandals, pink lips and sleek hair. Frieda Pinto looked beautiful at the NCAAP awards in a draped jewel-toned James Ferreira gown. Charlize Theron rocked a bright green Reed Krakoff Pre-Fall 2012 knee-length dress last year, which she paired with black accessories. Jessica Alba was also spotted in a casual green sheath dress with metallic pumps while out and about.
Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge also seems to favour the colour, as she has been spotted in different shades of the vibrant hue at various appearances, wearing them in figure flattering silhouettes. From Emilia Wickstead’s Green Coat Dress, a bright, fun Diane Von Furstenberg to a glamorous structured, peplum-detailed, Alexander McQueen gown with a thigh-high slit, she has tried them all with great success, typically styling her looks with nude or black pumps.
If you want to pick one green item for your closet, take notes from these celebs.
Emma Stone’s Burberry Prorsum Spring 2013 ensemble with a sparkling deep green skirt paired with midnight blue strapless top with peplum accents was a great colour blocked look. You could also pick a luxe green jacket like Rihanna or a vibrant green trouser like Tisca Chopra, which she paired with a white printed top and a blue belt for an effortless chic look.
Green is turning out to be a popular colour for Indian wear as well. Kajol paired her beige Sabyasachi sari with a green full sleeves blouse at a recent function, Esha Gupta looked great in a high neck Anand Kabra green-gold lehenga and Raveena Tandon wore a deep green Manish Malhtora Anarkali with blue trims to the Filmfare nominations bash.
The key to looking good in the colour of the moment, is to pick the right shade and pair it with neutral accessories- grey, beige, black or white. Remember to keep rest of the look clean and let the colour stand out. What is great about the colour is that it transitions very well between seasons as well. Look out for lighter shades for Spring-Summer and deeper, rich tones for Winter.
2013 Filmfare Awards were held at Yashraj Studios in Mumbai last weekend and here is a look at the best dressed divas from the event.
Deepika Padukone is easily the most consistent best dressed star on the Red Carpet. She scored another hit in an on-trend fashion forward black cut-out gown with sheer inserts from Prabal Gurung. She paired it with a slicked back ponytail, orange lips and studded Loubs.
Anushka Sharma, took a risk that paid off. Dressed in a draped high neck open back bright yellow Victoria Beckham gown she looked statuesque. Her make-up and hair was a throwback to the sixties with big hair, dark lips and cat eyes.
Illeana D’Cruz sparkled on the red carpet in a plunging Roberto Cavalli beaded gown with a flapper vibe. She did her hair up in a loose updo with face framing waves and accessorised with a shimmering clutch and drop earrings.
Sridevi looked smashing in a bright orange off-shoulder Alberta Ferretti gown paired with some serious jewels and a Leiber minaudiere.
Shruti Haasan smouldered on the red carpet in a dramatic Rakesh Aggarwal black and gold gown with a metallic gold corset and draped skirt. She let her gown to all the talking with minimal accessories, pulled back hair and muted make-up.
Chitrangada Singh gave a modern twist to the sari with a white, gold and yellow Anand Kabra ensemble paired with striking Amrapali earrings. Smoky eyes, side-swept fishtail braid and a Gucci clutch completed her look.

The 70th Annual Golden Globes Awards were held last week and here is a look at the some of the key fashion trends that celebrities endorsed and the Best Dressed Divas at the event.
Emily Blunt stuck literally to the ‘gold’ theme and wore a beautiful studded and embroidered Michael Kors gown paired with a gold Ferragamo clutch and striking pink earrings. The gown had side cut-outs which we saw emerging as a big trend on Spring 2013 runways.
Naomi Watts stood out in a high neck, long sleeved oxblood Zac Posen gown with a long train, keyhole detail and open back. She styled it with a red Ferragamo clutch, which seemed to be the go-to clutch brand at this event for most celebs.
Amy Adams glowed in a blush strapless lace Marchesa gown with a fishtail silhouette.
Varying shades of Red came out as one of the go-to colours for celebrities.
Claire Danes looked elegant in a modern draped Atelier Versace gown in red and Jennifer Garner shimmered in a Vivienne Westwood burgundy fully sequinned gown. Jennifer Lawrence decked herself out in a Christian Dior couture ball-gown paired with a (you guessed it!) Ferragamo clutch.
REGAL IN BLACK
What is a red carpet without a few dazzling black dresses?
Kate Hudson was her usual stylish self in a Black and Gold Alexander McQueen gown with exquisite gold embroidery, paired with a gold Roger Vivier clutch. Nicole Kidman also wore McQueen and her sleek sleeveless gown had a sheer waist. Continuing with the part-solid part-sheer trend, Rachel Weisz wore a black Louis Vuitton dress with polka dotted sheer overlays.
The Globes red-carpet this year was ruled by pristine icy whites and blush nude colours paired with equally fresh faced makeup and retro wavy hairdos.
Anne Hathaway looked lovely in a Chanel figure hugging Couture gown with an on-trend peplum waist. Glee actress Lea Michelle looked striking in a white beaded Elie Saab dress with a dramatic slit. In a sea of blush gowns, Megan Fox sure stood out in a lace strapless Dolce and Gabbana gown paired with pink earrings.
