Trend Report: New York Fashion Week Spring Summer 2013

By Pritha Bhattacharya Sep 16, 2012 11:15AM

New York Fashion Week Spring Summer 2013 was all about colour, prints, modern cuts and 60s inspired glamour. This week I have put together Top 10 Trends that stood out during the Fashion Week and will show up on our shopping lists six months down the line.

TREND 1: INDIAAAA!
Blingy India of the 60s was the flavour of NYFW SS2013 with Marchesa’s well received collection. We saw sari, kurta & lehenga inspired silhouettes, rich colours, intricate embroidery and brocade. This should be a celeb favourite collection for the 2013 awards season red carpet.

TREND 2: FRESH FACED LOOK
Nearly every designer from Prabal Gurung to Rebecca Minkoff, presented models with barely there make-up and fresh faces. Designers like Marc Jacobs and Micheal Kors accentuated the eyes via the smoky look and aqua eye shadow, with the rest of the face make-up free.

TREND 3: BRING ON THE COLOUR
Spring 2013 will be big on colour. Bold hues from across the spectrum were seen across runways with emerald greens and shocking pinks at Oscar de la Renta, marigold, coral & blues at Naeem Khan, yellow & orange at Jenny Packham, Michael Kors and Lela Rose.

TREND 4: PRINT IT UP
Vibrant Digital Prints made a big splash (literally!) with beautiful sunshine and cloud prints at Naeem Khan, wave prints at Michael Kors and Proenza Schouler’s beach scene photo print dresses.

TREND 5: SAY IT WITH LEATHER
You might think summer and leather don’t go together but this notion was negated this year with light weight and perforated coloured leather separates and detailing as seen at Tibi, Proenza Schouler, DKNY, Derek Lam, leather appliques at Naeem Khan and leather sheath dresses at Jason Wu.

TREND 6: MIDRIFF MANIA
Toned abs will continue to be in vogue next near, so don’t stop the gym routine any time soon. Midriff baring separates were seen across ramps at Jason Wu, Marchesa, Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, Philosophy di Alberta Ferreti. So crop tops, high-waisted knee length pencil skirts revealing a bit of skin, will be in.

TREND 7: STRIPE IT OUT
Stock up on Stripes as runways across Michael Kors, Philosophy di Alberta Ferreti, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta and Alice & Olivia showcased stripes in varied combinations. My favourite was the chevron styled stripes on a fun Oscar de la Renta strapless maxi dress with pockets! From work-wear to playful takes on the print there are many options to choose from.

TREND 8: BLACK & WHITE
Two tone will be big in Spring 2013 if you go by the number of collections that featured Black & White. The combination is classic and opposites do attract ref. Rachel Zoe, Alexander Wang, Michael Kors, Kate Spade.

TREND 9: SEXY CUT-OUTS
Modern experimental cut-outs were used to up the allure of simple cocktail dresses. Alexander Wang used fish-line embroidery and laser cut detail to add character to simple white dresses. The trend was also seen at Michael Kors. Victoria Beckham sliced cuffs off sleeves and at Cushnie et Ochs we saw a scalpel cut-out collection of sheath dresses.

TREND 10: FREE FLOWING AND FUN
Slouchy, flattering and easy-going silhouettes, billowing skirts, loose low-slung pants were seen at Prabal Gurung, Suno, Donna Karan, Victoria Beckham and Honor. And we love it!
