Stand-Out Trends from The Met Gala 2012

By Pritha Bhattacharya May 16, 2012 1:55PM

This is my first blog post on Style Mantra for MSN and what better way to start than to look back (just about 8 days!) at the key trends that emerged from the Met Gala 2012.

Well, for the uninitiated, the Met Gala (which is Costume Institute’s annual ball) is often touted as the Fashion Oscars, what with who’s who of fashion and entertainment industry converging at the Metropolitan Museum Art, it doesn’t get bigger than this.

This year (as it is with every year!), we had some stand out trends. Here’s a look at Top 5 trends that caught my eye.

Lace
Be it Heidi Klum’s effortlessly chic Escada or Lily Collin’s Valentino gown, lace and lady like silhouettes stood out.

Bling
What’s Met Gala without a serious dose of blingy glamour! Stars embraced metallic shades whole heartedly. All eyes were on Carey Mulligan’s Prada dress and Karolina Kurkova (who was my favorite at the event) in a custom Rachel Zoe dress.

Dark lips
Dark lips bordering on goth, was the most popular make-up trend of the night, with stylistas Camella Belle, Leighton Meester, Rooney Mara, Jessica Alba rocking the trend.

Open Back
The easiest way to look sexy and elegant is to flaunt an open back. Cameron Diaz in Stella McCartney and Camilla Belle proved that beyond measure. And who can forget Karolina Kurkova.

Yellow
Yellow can be difficult to work on the Red Carpet but it did emerge as a stand-out colour at the event, my favorite being January Jones in Versace. Fashion Forward celebs like Solange Knowles and Coco Rocha in Givenchy also looked incredibly chic in yellow.

I am already looking forward to what we will get to see at Cannes this week!
